Aprobación rápida para ciertos casos de discapacidad
Esta iniciativa beneficia a personas que padecen de discapacidades sumamente debilitantes o enfermedades que amenacen sus vidas.
La Administración del Seguro Social provee beneficios por discapacidad a los trabajadores estadounidenses que no pueden trabajar por un periodo de más de 12 meses debido a una enfermedad o condición física, mental o emocional.
Aunque la evaluación de cada caso puede durar varios meses o hasta años, el Seguro Social puede reducir el tiempo de espera a tan sólo unas semanas si el caso cumple con los requisitos del programa de Aprobación de beneficios por compasión (Compassionate Allowances Program, en inglés). Esta iniciativa beneficia a personas que padecen de discapacidades sumamente debilitantes o enfermedades que amenacen sus vidas. La idea es que reciban sus beneficios lo más rápido posible.
Cómo funciona el programa La Administración del Seguro Social (SSA, por su sigla en inglés) comenzó el programa de Aprobación de beneficios por compasión en 2008. Al principio la iniciativa sólo abarcaba 50 condiciones, incluyendo ciertos cánceres, trastornos mentales y enfermedades del sistema inmunológico. Hoy, la lista incluye un poco más de 100 enfermedades y condiciones, y se espera que para el verano de 2012 el número aumente a 165.
“Estas enfermedades son tan severas que no necesitamos desarrollar completamente el historial de trabajo del solicitante para tomar una decisión y por lo tanto el proceso es más rápido”, dijo Diana Varela, portavoz de la agencia en la zona metropolitana de Washington, D.C. La SSA está constantemente evaluando las enfermedades para agregar a la lista. El sitio web de la SSA contiene una lista de las enfermedades y condiciones (en inglés) del programa, incluidas las agregadas recientemente.
Cómo solicitar beneficios por discapacidad
El proceso para beneficiarse de las aprobaciones por compasión es el mismo que el proceso para solicitar beneficios por discapacidad. Sin embargo, lo diferente es que una vez que la SSA determina que la condición reúne los requisitos para esta categoría, el proceso avanza más rápidamente. Se pueden solicitar beneficios por discapacidad por Internet y sin tener que presentarse en una oficina del Seguro Social. La solicitud está en español aunque el informe de discapacidad y otros documentos obligatorios están disponibles solamente en inglés.
Para solicitar beneficios por discapacidad se necesita proveer la siguiente información: Datos generales como nombre, fecha de nacimiento y número de Seguro Social del solicitante y el cónyuge, así como de los niños menores de edad. Asimismo, se debe proporcionar el número de cuenta de banco y un contacto adicional Datos médicos como nombre, dirección y teléfono de doctores, clínicas y hospitales donde la persona recibió tratamiento, así como información del empleador. Asimismo, es necesario proveer el nombre de medicamentos y resultados de exámenes médicos, entre otras cosas.
